Project overview

Age Scotland, a national charity, aims to improve the lives of people over the age of 50 throughout Scotland, promoting their rights and interests. Previously they were closely linked with Age UK but became entirely independent in 2024. As their previous website as a section within the Age UK site they required a new highly functional and accessible website which met the requirements of their target audiences.

What we delivered

Here’s how we created a new online home for Age Scotland

  • Digital strategy development – informed by research & workshops we created an overall strategy and content strategy
  • Functionality - through in depth investigation and research we defined the charities functionality requirements, scoping each item in minute detail including data integration
  • Responsive, accessible website design & development
  • Pre-Launch search engine optimisation
  • Hosting & ongoing support

Our Agile Methodology

We follow agile principles in all our projects, meaning we develop solutions in adaptable, iterative stages. Instead of delivering everything at once, we collaborate closely with our clients throughout the process, ensuring continuous progress and flexibility.

With Age Scotland, we began by holding discovery workshops to define key elements such as target audiences, project goals, KPIs, and overall strategy. This foundation allowed us to move into the creative phase, where we developed logo concepts and crafted the website’s design.

The website was then built in ‘sprints’. Each week, we worked on designing, building, and testing new features, keeping the client fully engaged at every stage. This iterative process ensured real-time feedback and adjustments, making sure the project consistently reflected their vision.

Functionality

Projects always include a reasonable level of online functionality, but the Age Scotland site had numerous interactive requirements to meet the needs of the different audiences and internal departments.

  • Payment gateway integration (Stripe)
  • Membership subscription (with payment)
  • Onsite donations (one-off and recurring)
  • Fundraising campaigns & appeals
  • Online shop (with payment)
  • Virtual gifts (with payment)
  • Events with booking (and payment)
  • Workshops with booking (and payment)
  • Volunteering opportunities with sign-up
  • Job applications process
  • Integration with internal systems

Continuous testing & quality assurance

We prioritise quality at every stage of development. By creating a functional prototype early in the process, we enabled the Invest Glasgow team to actively participate in testing and refinement, ensuring the project stayed on track with their goals. This prototype was continually updated and tested through multiple iterations, incorporating feedback from both the client and their target audience. Before launch, the site underwent rigorous evaluations to ensure it adhered to high standards in accessibility, security, and SEO, making sure it performed optimally across all key areas.

The end result

The result of this project was a highly functional, user-friendly, and accessible website that became the new digital hub for a national charity following their separation from a larger organisation. Starting with their existing brand guidelines, we designed a fresh and cohesive look and feel that reflected their identity and values.

Through a series of strategy workshops, we collaborated closely with the charity’s team to define their key audiences and objectives. This allowed us to create a site that catered specifically to their needs, ensuring an engaging and seamless experience for all users. The website was built with a wide range of functionality, including online fundraising and donation tools, a workshop booking system, an integrated online shop, membership subscriptions, and a user-friendly vacancy application feature.

The client and their target audiences have praised the final site for its accessibility, ease of navigation, and ability to meet their diverse needs. Whether visitors are donating, signing up for events, or becoming members, the website offers an intuitive and efficient journey. Overall, the platform has empowered the charity to engage more effectively with their community and continue their work independently in this new chapter.
